calm before a storm

sagaing, mandalay division, myanmar

only six months ago thousands of monks, later supported and joined by tens of thousands of civilians, marched the streets of mandalay and yangon. at first, the military regime didn’t interfere and even let the peaceful protesters march towards aung san suu kyi’s house. after a few days however, police and military forces brutally ended the demonstrations - officially - killing ten and injuring several dozens. the picture was taken in september 2007 in village near mandalay barely a week before the first major demonstrations started.
